A well maintained metal roof system can last anywhere from 30 to 70 years depending on which material is used.
Shed roof extension.
The gable style roof.
All of them make a good choice for your garden shed.
It typically has a single face that is higher on one end than the other.
It can be made by bending plywood over ribs or arch cut rafters.
Set center posts if the shed is 8 feet long or two intervening posts if it is longer.
Set 4 by 4 inch posts at each end of the shed and as far out as you want the lean to to extend.
Beyond the standard flat roof or single sloped roof the most common styles of shed roof are gable gambrel skillion and salt box.
Make a dirt floor lean to as the simplest addition to a shed.
Saltbox roofs look like skillion roofs but with an extra short slope opposite the long angled plane like an upside down check mark.
Sample of gambrel truss plans.
Depending on where your shed is located the higher end can be fastened to the side of another building such as your house or garage.
A shed roof that is not stick framed will be built with trusses.
Another method is using tongue and groove planks laid over curved ribs or arches.
Another advantage that metal roofing offers is durability.
What is the roof structure.
Each of these styles has their advantage both in design and construction.
A curved shed roof design offers a mix of the flat and gable roof style creating the curve or arch.
Metal roofs have a long life span due to the strength of the material itself.
The first thing to do is to take a look at the roof of the shed.
It is often used to increase headroom without adding much height.
Probably one of the simplest shed roof designs out there this style of roof is commonly referred to as a lean to or skillion type of roof.
A skillion roof is made up of a single flat plane which slopes gradually from top to bottom.
Building a shed roof with trusses.
The easiest to extend would be if the roof is a series of individual trusses at say 16 centres.
Looking at the existing roof will also give you an idea of timber sizes and how the members are connected.
I have found in all my years of building sheds that using pre built trusses is so much easier and simpler then building a shed roof with a ridge board especially if you are building your outdoor shed yourself.
